I recently saw a post on Facebook sharing a recipe for pumpkin dog biscuits. The post included many comments from other dog owners who were also busy baking their own dog treats. I did a little “Google” research and found that baking fresh nutritious dog treats is very popular indeed. So I decided to give it a try. I adapted my own recipe and started baking.
Ingredients
½ Butternut Pumpkin – boiled until soft & blended with a dash of milk until smooth
~400g of brown rice flour – I got mine from the health section at Coles
1 teaspoon of chicken stock powder or salt
3 eggs
Mix all of the ingredients together adding milk until a firm dough is formed. Knead a little and then roll the dough out until it is about 1cm thick. Cut the treats using a knife or biscuit cutter, and place on an oven tray. Bake at 180C for 20 minutes, then carefully turn and bake for 20 more minutes.
During my research I was surprised by the number of warnings about dog food products made in China and Taiwan. I visited my local pet food store and found that many of the dog biscuit treats were from Taiwan – especially the cheaper ones. If you have the time, home baking your dog treats is definitely a better alternative and you control the ingredients that your dog is eating.
Trust me – your dog will love your home made dog treats.
